چکیده

Results A 16-week VLCD significantly reduced bodyweight, hepatic TG content, visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat and pericardial fat volumes to 78, 16, 40, 55 and 83%, respectively, of baseline values (all p<0.05). After an additional 14 months of follow-up on a regular diet, weight and hepatic TG content increased significantly to 90 and 73% of baseline values (P<0.05). After these 14 months the preferential loss in visceral fat compared to subcutaneous abdominal fat was lost. In contrast, pericardial fat volume remained reduced to the same extent.

Long-term beneficial effect of a 16-week very low calorie diet on pericardial fat in obese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

Pericardial fat accumulation has been associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. A very low calorie diet (VLCD) improves the cardiovascular risk profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), by improving the metabolic profile, heart function, and triglyceride (TG) stores in (non)adipose tissues. However, long-term effects of a VLCD on pericardial fat volume and tissue-specifi...

Basic disturbances in skeletal muscle fatty acid metabolism in obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The present article addresses the hypothesis that disturbances in skeletal muscle fatty acid handling in abdominal obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus may play a role in the aetiology of increased adipose tissue stores, increased triacylglycerol storage in skeletal muscle and skeletal muscle insulin resistance. The uptake and/or oxidation of fatty acids have been shown to be impaired during po...
